Alps Craftsman recently completed a comprehensive renovation for a client that completely reimagined the layout and functionality of their first floor. Project Overview
The client’s home presented a challenging layout that caused significant daily inconveniences. The powder room was awkwardly positioned, separating the kitchen from the family room, and the kitchen itself featured a peninsula with the stove inconveniently placed at the edge, directly across from the refrigerator. This configuration made it nearly impossible for more than one person to use the kitchen at a time, as accessing the fridge required the person cooking to move out of the way. Additionally, the back of the house had a poorly utilized deck area, and the kitchen needed more natural light and flow.
The client engaged Alps Craftsman and an architect they hired to overhaul the entire first floor, to improve both the functionality and aesthetics of the space.
Scope and Scale of the Project
The renovation involved extensive work, including architectural redesigns, structural changes, and custom cabinetry. The primary areas of focus were the kitchen, the mudroom, and the family room, with an emphasis on creating a more open and connected living space.
1. Kitchen Reconfiguration
Alps Craftsman undertook a complete overhaul of the kitchen’s problematic layout, transforming it from a cramped and inconvenient space into a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing area. The original peninsula, which had created a bottleneck between the stove and refrigerator, was eliminated, allowing for a more efficient use of space. Key elements —stove, refrigerator, and pantry—were repositioned along a single continuous wall, creating a streamlined galley-style kitchen. This redesign not only improved the kitchen’s workflow but also allowed the client to include a central island, a feature they were eager to have despite the space constraints. The island became the kitchen’s focal point, offering additional counter space and much-needed storage, all while maintaining the room’s openness.
In addition to reconfiguring the kitchen layout, Alps Craftsman addressed the flow between the kitchen and other areas of the home. By extending into the former mudroom, they created a new eating area that blends seamlessly with the kitchen. The original sliding door, which had previously occupied valuable wall space, was replaced with a standard swinging door. This change enhanced accessibility and provided more room for cabinetry, further optimizing the kitchen’s functionality.
2. Kitchen Design and Renovation:
The kitchen renovation was not only a functional overhaul but also a significant aesthetic transformation, with the color blue serving as the central design element. The client’s deep love for the color blue was fully embraced, making it the focal point of the kitchen. The custom blue cabinets were a bold and personal choice, bringing vibrancy and personality to the space. To balance the intensity of the blue, the countertops were chosen in a muted engineered quartz, which provided an elegant contrast without overshadowing the cabinetry.
The kitchen island, a key feature of the renovation, was carefully designed to complement the blue cabinets while also standing out as its own statement piece. The island featured a natural stone granite countertop, selected for its heat resistance and durability, making it both a practical and visually striking addition to the kitchen. The island not only provided extra counter space and storage but also served as a central hub for family activities, from meal prep to casual dining.
The backsplash further tied the design together, featuring a basket weave pattern with subtle hints of blue that echoed the cabinetry. This thoughtful coordination of colors and materials created a cohesive and visually appealing kitchen that reflected the client’s unique style and needs. 3. Mudroom Transformation:
The renovation also extended into the home’s former mudroom, which had previously been an underutilized space primarily used for laundry. Alps Craftsman repurposed this area into a multifunctional space that better served the family’s needs. The installation of a custom-built “hall tree,” made entirely of cabinets, transformed the mudroom into a practical storage area. This feature provided the family with organized space for shoes, hats, gloves, and other seldom-used items, effectively turning the mudroom into a transition area between the garage and the kitchen. This area is also where the powder room was relocated to, allowing for the open space between the kitchen and family room. The redesign not only added valuable storage but also improved the overall flow and functionality of the first floor.
4. Family Room and Additional Storage Solutions:
The family room renovation was designed to complement the newly renovated kitchen while establishing its own distinct aesthetic. Although the color scheme differed from the bold blue featured in the kitchen, the design remained cohesive and harmonious. Alps Craftsman achieved this by using the same style of cabinet doors throughout the first floor, ensuring a seamless transition between the spaces.
In the family room, a more subdued color palette was chosen, with dark gray cabinets providing a sophisticated contrast to the kitchen’s vibrant blue. This thoughtful coordination allowed the two spaces to feel connected while still maintaining their own unique identities. The renovation also included the addition of built-in cabinetry surrounding the fireplace and beneath the television, significantly enhancing the room’s storage capacity. These built-ins provided the client with ample space to display knick-knacks, memorabilia, and other cherished items that had previously been stored away due to a lack of suitable space.
